![]() Nobody could have imagined that Herlings would go through that 2018 season and win nearly every single Grand Prix and win the championship by a massive 933 points, compared to 782 by Cairoli. Searle scored 1-1 results and while it didn’t close the gap enough to see him fight Herlings for the title in the final three rounds, it was enough to go down in British motocross folk law.įor me and many others the 2018 battle between Herlings and Antonio Cairoli was another of the highlights of the British circuit. ![]() When the two arrived at Matterley Basin it seemed that Herlings was building so much momentum that Searle might struggle to contain him, but thankfully for the large British crowd, that wasn’t the case. The championship points were 572 for Herlings and 521 for Searle and Herlings was coming off 1-1-1-1 scores in Russia and the Czech Republic, while Searle went 3-2-2-3 in those four motos. With the championship seemingly already over nobody could have expected the British rider to arrive in England with so much fire in his belly. Searle had also beaten Herlings in seven of the 18 motos leading into Sweden, but then went 0-0 at the Latvian GP and his championship began to collapse. ![]() It was one of those championships that reeked drama, with Herlings winning the season opener in Valkenswaard with his typical 1-1 result at the white sand of his home Grand Prix, but Searle fought back winning in Brazil, Belgium and Sweden. There have been other moments that light up Matterley Basin, for instance in 2012 and the Searle vs Herlings battle. To this day the Belgian great see’s his Matterley Basin performance as one of his high points in a magnificent career. RC got injured and all the focus was on Everts vs Stewart and I don’t think too many expected the type of send-off Everts would get. The event had sold out due to the fact it was Everts final des Nations and in fact his final major race before retirement, and also for the fact Ricky Carmichael was meant to ride. Without question, one of the great MXdN's ever. It was a day none of us will forget, and it doesn’t matter if you were that 10-year-old Max Anstie cheering on Billy Mackenzie, or little Liam Everts, the son of Stefan watching his father demolish the rider said to be the fastest rider on the planet, James Stewart.įrom the pouring rain on the Friday and Saturday, which turned out to make the track tacky and perfect for good racing, to the brilliance of Everts, Stewart, Ryan Villopoto and Antonio Cairoli, it was a magical day in the eventual sunshine of the circuit in the valley. Matterley Basin has always been a circuit that has created brilliant moments, from that very first year of its existence and the 2006 Monster Energy Motocross of Nations.
